How it works the Fraxel laser
The Fraxel laser creates tiny "micro-thermal" zones (think pixels) deep in the skin that our body repairs, pushing out the old damaged skin (the tiny pixels) and replacing it with new skin.
Each treatment replaces around 15-20% of damaged, scarred or sun-damaged skin. It activates the body's natural healing process, accelerating the production of collagen and new, healthier skin cells. 1,000-2,000 micro-thermal zones are created per square centimetre.

Frequently asked questions about Fraxel treatment
Can I return to my work and activities immediately?
No, you will need to take the rest of the day off to ice and care for the treated area. You may return to all activities, including exercise, when your doctor approves, usually 1-7 days after your laser treatment. Swimming in a chlorinated pool is not recommended for 1-3 weeks. You may exercise outdoors with a wide-brimmed hat and a high quality 10% zinc or titanium sunscreen when approved by your doctor.
What recommendations should I follow after a Fraxel treatment?
- Ice for ten minutes every hour for the first 5-6 hours to reduce swelling. Use a bag of frozen peas covered with a thin, clean cloth/towel.
- Avoid scratching or rubbing the treated skin; do not place adhesive bandages over the treated areas.
- Men may shave 1-2 days after treatment, but very gently.
- Avoid all saunas and hot tubs. Showers may be taken, but avoid hot water and direct shower spray to the treatment area for the first 3 days after treatment.
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 to 72 hours (this includes all yoga).
- Avoid alcoholic beverages for 24-48 hours.
- Sleep with 1-2 extra pillows at night to keep the head up for the first two nights (For facial treatments).
- Avoid direct sunlight for a minimum of 4 weeks after your treatment and use a 10% zinc or titanium sunscreen for the next 4 weeks. If you are actively outdoors, you should reapply your sunscreen every 2 to 4 hours and wear a wide-brimmed hat.
- Do not use any retinoid, Retin-A or glycolic products for the first 2 weeks after the procedure. Do not use over-the-counter creams without first consulting your doctor.
- Refrain from any chemical peel or microdermabrasion treatments for 4 weeks after the procedure.
What will I look like immediately after treatment and what is the healing time?
During the first 24 hours after treatment, your skin may feel sunburnt. It is recommended to use ice packs or frozen peas for 5 to 10 minutes per hour for the first 5 to 6 hours after treatment.
Your skin will be very red immediately after treatment, this redness will fade over the next 1 to 3 days. You will usually be able to return to your normal activities, including work, after a recovery time that varies between 1 and 3 days depending on the patient and the doctor's recommendation. Occasionally, the redness may take longer to fade. Make-up may be used to reduce the redness. Rarely, bruising may occur, which may take up to two weeks to disappear. In general it is highly recommended to allow 2-3 weeks between treatment and weddings, reunions, family photos, etc. just to be on the safe side.
Within a few days of treatment, it is common for the skin to have a "tanned" appearance, which can last 1-2 weeks. Your skin may flake and peel a little. Using a moisturiser will help reduce the appearance of dry flakes. Remember, several treatments will be necessary for optimal results.
